Turning a Pen on a lathe Process
Step 1: First, choose your pen blank wood and the correct pen kit. Make sure the wood is large enough for both pen barrels and check that the pen kit parts match the size of your blanks. Before cutting anything, inspect the wood for cracks, weak spots, or other problems that could affect the finished pen. Starting with good materials will make the rest of the process easier and help the final pen turn out better.
Step 2: Next, mark and prepare the pen blanks. Measure the blank and divide it into the two barrel sections. Transfer the markings carefully so you know exactly where each cut will be made. As you prepare to cut, make sure you are able to make straight cuts and drill straight holes. Accuracy is very important because uneven cuts or crooked holes can cause problems when the pen is assembled.
Step 3: After the blanks are marked, cut the wood into the two barrel pieces. Drill a straight hole through the center of each piece so the pen tubes will fit correctly. Once the holes are drilled, glue the pen tubes into the two pieces you just prepared. Be sure the tubes are fully inserted and lined up properly. Then allow enough time for the glue to dry completely before moving on.
Step 4: When the glue is dry, sand the pen blanks down to the tube ends. Be careful not to remove too much material. You need to leave enough wood so the pen barrels keep their shape and strength. After trimming the ends, continue sanding the blanks on all four sides until they are smooth and ready for shaping. This helps prepare the wood for the lathe.
Step 5: Finally, mount the two pen blanks on the lathe using the bushings. Tighten all parts securely before starting. Begin carving and shaping the wood down to the bushing lengths, checking often to make sure both barrels are the correct size. Once shaping is complete, sand the barrels smooth and prepare them for finishing. After everyone is done, assemble the pen together as a class by pressing all the parts into place.
